Cichlid's are the most exciting freshwater fish you could ever put into your aquarium. Their exciting, intelligent and robust personalities will give you years of unparalleled entertainment. My name is Michael Cecere, I am building this site for my online computer class at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. I have created this web page for anyone to visit and be able to discuss the hobby of keeping Cichlid's or any other freshwater fish in a home based aquarium. Before you attempt to setup an aquarium with cichlid's it is imperative that you do some research; many people I know just aquired these fish due to the fact that they could watch them eat goldfish, or they like to watch fish fight each other. This might be fun to the ignorant and uneducated fishkeeper, but after a while of keeping them you will become attached and realize that these are living creatures and must be treated with the utmost care and respect. Many of these cichlid's at a young age are only about half an inch long but after about a year or two they will nearly triple in size and aggresive nature so I suggest that you plan ahead I recommend 15 -20 gallons for every cichlid that you have and a good deal of hiding spots as well. Please also take note that these fish need certain additions to their home, you cant just plop them in there and expect them to live long healthy lives. These fish need a controlled temperature ranging from 70 to 82 degrees as well as some sort of filter. I recommend the penguin series of filters which provide chemical, mechanical as well as biological filtration for the fraction of the cost of many other filters.
Currently I have a 55 Gallon tank setup with a emperor 400 and two Penguin 170 sponge power heads for a circular natural water flow and more than adequete filtration. In this tank I have a Red Devil, Jack Dempsey, Firemouth, Black Convict, Green Terror, Texas Cichlid and a Plecostamus. All of these freshwater fish are under a year old in my aquarium.
